Homemade stationary exercise bike?

I’m about to have another knee surgery and I know that using exercise bikes are very good for rebuilding the knee, but I’m low on dough. I was wondering if I could somehow take apart an old bike I have and use it? Would you recommend this? If so, what do I do to make it?

Pre-made bike trainers are so inexpensive that its unlikely you could construct anything useful for less. I have used one similar to the one below for several years, and its proved sturdy and reliable.
